Copy & Restoration
...is part science, part art and we’ve been practicing it for over 30 years. Families, historical societies and museums have trusted us to copy and digitize their collections.
When it's time to share your family photos or you discover a relative's trove of old pictures, there are bound to be some cracks, stains or other damage spoiling the image. Some are relatively easy to fix while others may require hours of expert, painstaking retouching.
We prefer to estimate a repair based on seeing it.
We also prefer to scan or digitally photograph originals with our high resolution equipment to maximize the quality of the final prints. Your original is returned to you in the same condition as before.
If you only plan to make small prints, you may email or send a CD with a file suitable for the purpose. It should be scanned at 300 dpi at the actual size of the final print.
Printing Options
Photographic style papers
Sometimes the restored image should be printed on a similar type of paper as the original. Many color prints from the 70's have now turned blue or pink from age and exposure to sunlight, having lasted their full life expectancy of 25 years. That was the the state of printing then. New color papers and processes create work that will last over 75 years before fading begins, when displayed or stored properly.
Art Papers and Pigmented Archival Inks
A wonderful range of alternate papers exists for reproducing your original. These will further enhance the restoration by lending an artistic quality an heirloom print deserves. Choices include heavy and light textured watercolor papers, canvas, velvet finish and a very popular smooth matte. All are acid free and rated to last approximately 100 years before noticeable fading occurs when printed with our pigmented archival inks and displayed or stored properly.

Flat Art ScansThe first step is to capture a fine quality scan made at the proper resolution for the largest print you want. Our scanners for flat art, film and photos accomodate an original size up to 12 x 16 inches. Larger pieces are photographed with the appropriate camera in our studio. Your originals never leave the building. Every scan is cropped as needed and includes some minor retouching. For dust, scratches and other forms of damage please read about photo restorations or bring the original in for an estimate.
